2022 Minifairs will host the new edition of the Women and Girls in Science program promoted by the field of knowledge

Primary and secondary school children will have a ‘direct connection’ with six prominent researchers from the islands in the ‘Meet and Ask Our Scientists and Technology Experts’ activity

The 2022 Canary Islands Science and Innovation Mini-Exhibits will host the new edition of Women and Girls in Science, highlighting the various champions of today’s Canary Science, whose professions help build today’s society. Through them, island youth will be able to learn how this work impacts fields related to engineering, communications, biology, marine technology or ocean health.

The Minifairs and Women and Girls in Science Program are two initiatives for the social dissemination of scientific culture promoted by the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI) of the Ministry of Economy, Knowledge and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, where they are playing an active role in trying to reduce the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) sectors.

The Minifairs ‘Meet and Ask Our Scientists and Technologists’ activity will allow primary and secondary school pupils from the Canary Islands to ‘direct contact’ with six outstanding researchers from the islands, all women who push boundaries daily to achieve it. their goals. Delve into their scientific lives, experiences, motives, and research, and help raise awareness of the role of women in science and the important need to strengthen the scientific and technological vocations of the girls and women of the archipelago.

The activity is conducted in an online format, facilitating as many contacts as possible with educational centers that request it, and is scheduled to take place on May 5, 6, 9, 10 and 11, in five 45-minute sessions.

On May 5, at 10:30 a.m., a digital connection will be established with Cristina Medina Lopez, PhD in industrial engineering, educator and researcher at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

On May 6, at 9:15 a.m., two scientists will intervene: Behnaz Majlissen, a communications engineer, a doctoral student in Marie-Curie VLC Communications program in the underwater environment, and Saray Ruffo Torres, a doctoral student at IDeTIC on the study of the Internet of Tourist Behavior (IoB) for tourists.

On Monday, May 9, at 9:00 a.m., it will be Sandra Sanchez Gaut, MD, a biochemist and immunologist.

On Tuesday, May 10, 10:30 a.m., there will be a talk by Ana Redondo Rodriguez, Marine Science Graduate from the University of Cadiz, PhD in Physical Oceanography from the University of Queensland (Australia) and Researcher in Oceanography and Marine Technology.

The latest Women and Girls in Science lecture will take place on Wednesday, May 11, at 9:00 a.m., with Sarah Vidal-López, Ph.D., molecular biology and microbiology researcher.

The entities Arquimea Research Centre, Lightbeecorp and the SIANI University Institute of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria collaborate in this activity.
