The Concacaf region could again participate in the 2024 Copa America. Mexico, Canada and the United States are all set to negotiate a return to competition in preparation for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the three countries.
According to Fox Sports, CONMEBOL promised to open negotiations to consider participation in the continental exhibition of American football and Canadian football, although hours later it was announced that Mexico would join or “nothing”.
“Confirmed, very much confirmed, first, by both confederations: their idea is to invite Conmebol to organize the Copa America in the United States in 2024. But not only with the United States and Canada, but as a bloc, that is, Mexico with the United States and Canada,” explained Fox’s journalist Ruben Rodriguez.
However, they won’t be the only ones returning to the Copa America from the Concacaf region, as they are considering making four groups with either Costa Rica, Panama or Honduras.
Portugal’s decision to replace Cristiano Ronaldo at the World Cup
CONCACAF last had a representative at the 2016 Copa America Centenario, which featured Haiti, Costa Rica, Mexico, Jamaica, the United States and Panama.
Notably, Mexico, Canada and the United States will not be playing in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
