Cortez calms Ohtani and Trout; The Yankees won the series against the Angels

NEW YORK — Néstor Cortés kept Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout off the bases, Jose Trevino hit a three-run homer in a five-run first inning and the New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Angels 9-3. Thursday in the Angels second All-Star dual of a three-way series.

Ohtani and Trout went 0-for-3 against Cortez. In a battle of three players selected for the All-Star Game.

Ohtani walked Vandy Peralta with two outs in the seventh and Trout followed with a groundout single to second baseman Oswald Peraza. Anthony Renton, who has been homeless this season, left with the bases loaded.

Aaron Judge sparked the first inning, and a day later he hit a two-run homer and saved three runs, robbing Ohtani of a homer and denying a diving Brandon Drury a catch.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa made a pair of diving catches in center and hit a two-run single in a three-run seventh. Anthony Rizzo went 3-for-3 with a pair of walks, bringing his average to .344.

For the Angels, Venezuelan Luis Rengifo had two runs to make it 2-1.

For the Yankees, Gleyber Torres of Venezuela went 4-1 with one run, Oswald Peraza 4-1 with one run and two RBIs, and Osvaldo Cabrera 4-0.
