French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that the protests in front of Congress did not reflect the true face of the United States.

Macron tweeted on Twitter that American democracy was one of the oldest democracies in the world and that what Trump supporters had done would hurt global democratic thinking.

Macron reaffirmed that his country has always supported the freedom of the American people and that Paris saw Washington as a symbol of democracy.

He continued, “The United States sided with France in the First and Second World Wars. Today Paris stands by the American people. They chose to run the country freely.”

In a dangerous precedent in American political life, the Congress building on Wednesday witnessed clashes between security forces and Trump supporters and opponents.

The storm occurred during a session of Congress to certify the results of the presidential election and to confirm the name of the winning president and his deputy, and the session was adjourned for six hours.

For his part, U.S. Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Conte announced that 4 people had died during protests in front of Congress.

Conte said in a statement that 52 people had been arrested after Trump supporters stormed a congressional building.
