A Michigan man won $100,000 on a losing lottery ticket

(CNN) – How can a losing lottery ticket win a big prize? It happened to a guy from Michigan who played a multi-million dollar lottery game several times and lost, but still won $100,000.

The Wayne County man, who preferred to remain anonymous, benefited from using his previously unsuccessful tickets as part of the $6 million Michigan Lottery jackpot.

“I’ve been playing the $6 million lottery jackpot a lot, so when I heard there was a second chance element to the game, I thought I’d give it a try,” the player told Michigan Lottery.

Players can enter by scanning non-winning tickets into the state’s lottery mobile app ticket reader for each of the 10 drawing entry periods, according to the Michigan Lottery website.

Each non-winning ticket to the $6 million grand prize is eligible for a second chance to win a prize ranging from $500 to $100,000.

The 43-year-old winner was selected in a random drawing on April 27th.

At first I didn’t think I’d won.

“One day I received an email from the lottery telling me I had won a $100,000 prize,” he said in a press release. “I thought it was a joke.”

Call to confirm whether or not the email is a scam.

“I was in shock,” he said. “Winning doesn’t feel real yet, and I don’t think I’m going to dive in for a while.”

The player, who recently visited Michigan Lottery headquarters to claim the money, said he plans to save his winnings.

A 44-year-old woman from St. Clair County, Michigan, won $100,000 on a losing lottery ticket in April, according to a press release.
