BALTIMORE — Bruce Bochy is on fire for another postseason where everything he tries seems to work.
Mitch Carver hit a grand slam in the third inning and the Texas Rangers won their fourth straight game to open the postseason, beating the Baltimore Orioles 11-8 on Sunday to clinch the American League Division Series. .
The Rangers, who qualified through the wild card, have outscored the American League’s two best teams, the Orioles and Tampa Bay, by a combined 25-11 margin in the regular season.
Bochy was one win away from his first AL Championship Series as a manager. He reached that milestone four times in the NL and won three World Series titles with San Francisco.
“It’s a little hard to read his emotions because sometimes he looks like he’s sitting in a lawn chair watching the game,” said Carver, making his first appearance in these playoffs. “But yes, we believe in his decisions and the way he manages the game.”
Gunner Henderson and Aaron Hicks played for the America East champion Orioles, who have not won a streak of at least two games since May 2022. Now they are in danger of being wiped out at the most inopportune moment.
Hicks drove in five runs, including three on a one-out shot that brought the Orioles within three runs for the first time since Carver’s grand slam. But it was too late.
Texas fell behind for the first time this season when the Orioles scored two runs in the first inning, but the Rangers responded with five in the second inning to chase rookie Grayson Rodriguez from the top. Carver, a backup catcher who was given the chance to serve as the designated hitter, hit a grand slam to make it 9-2.
“He can hit and he’s done a great job for us this year,” Bochy said. “So today I gave him the right. An actor he managed to capture watched. He has great power, which is great at that stage of the game. “It really made a difference.”

According to SportsRadar, Texas became the first team in postseason history with seven hits and seven walks after three innings.
“It’s a good offense that’s been really good all year, but at the same time we walked them 11,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “You’re not doing yourself any favors when they allow more traffic on the lanes.”
None of the starters made it past fifth. Cody Bradford was credited with the win in relief of Jordan Montgomery, going 3 2/3 without allowing a run.
The Rangers will start Nathan Ewaldi for Monday’s Game 3 at Texas. Hyde will announce his pitcher on Monday.
This is the first time the Rangers will host a postseason game at Globe Life Field. The stadium was the site for most of the 2020 postseason for other teams due to the coronavirus pandemic.
For the Rangers, Cuban Adolis Garcia went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Dominican Leodi Taveras is 3-1, with three runs scored and two RBI.
For the Orioles, Dominican Jorge Mateo went 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Anthony Santander of Venezuela
