The grim gift of Jim Carrey, the king of comedy: Far from fame and surrounded by his demons

What does Jim Carrey think when he wakes up every morning in his mansion in Brentwood, California? When you walk through that house with five bedrooms, nine bathrooms, pool, spa and tennis court, how would you rate your life? When you walk down the hallway of that property you bought for four million dollars and is worth ten today, will you be happy? When you look at your life in that magnifying glass that some call success, you can't help but smile. For years he was the king of comedy in Hollywood, earning twenty million dollars per film and his name was known across the planet. But if you look at your life through a magnifying glass that some call happiness, the smile becomes a mask.

Although he holds American citizenship, Carey was born on January 17, 1962 in Ontario, Canada. He had a troubled childhood. His mother, Kathleen, loved her children dearly, but with uncontrollable hypochondria, she spent all her time with some imaginary illness. Her youngest son discovered that if he could make her laugh, she wasn't depressed. “My mother was in bed and on pain pills. I wanted her to feel better. I would sneak into her room, imitate a mantis, do weird things, jump off walls or throw myself down the stairs to make her laugh.

Laughter helped not only mom, but dad too. Percy worked as an administrative clerk. But from one day to the next, the man lost his job and the family had to move into a mobile home, before surviving on the streets. His parents began to have frequent arguments, and to stop them, Jim started dancing until they laughed.

Eventually, Percy found work as a security guard and his children as cleaners at a tire factory. Workdays lasted eight hours and Jim had to skip school. The father noticed that his youngest son was beginning to lose the joy that had made him unique and encouraged him to try his hand as a comedian in local bars.

The first performance was at the age of 15 and was a humiliating failure. He tried to tell a few jokes in a yellow polyester dress made by his mother, and the audience responded with thunderous, almost endless boos. Instead of giving up, he improvised his show and did the rest verbally. A little boy who made people laugh by doing more than eighty tricks started to spread that he had a unique ability to change his facial expressions. Clint Eastwood, Elvis Presley, James Stewart and another amazing actor, Jerry Lewis, are the most celebrated.
