Phil Foden's hat-trick brought Manchester City to within two points of Liverpool for a fifth successive win in the Round of 23 at Brentford (3-1) on Monday. And with one less game.
The champions of the last three editions of the Premier League have 49 points, ahead of Arsenal (3rd), who beat Liverpool (1st, 51 points) the previous day, but have a game to play again on February 20. Against Brentford, one cartridge more than their rivals for the title.
At their stadium, the 'Peace' were first to thank their man of the match, Frenchman Neil Maube, who beat the defense after goalkeeper Mark Flecken's goal kick and fired a low shot past Ederson (21).
But Phil Foden's (45+3, 53, 70) hat-trick turned things around and helped the 'Citizens' get revenge against the only team who won both their games against them in the first and second round last season.
Brentford are 15th after suffering their seventh defeat in eight games.
