This has allowed an influx of talent and large numbers of workers that have buoyed its economy over the years, including many from Latin America.

And, in recent years, it has made Canada one of the fastest growing population countries in the world.

In 2023, the number of residents increased by 3.2%, the largest variation since data was available, to exceed 40.5 million, a historic population record.

“Canada's population growth comes almost entirely from permanent or temporary net immigration,” a spokesperson for the Canadian Department of Immigration (IRCC) told BBC Mundo.

More than 1.25 million foreigners, including permanent and permanent residents, immigrated to Canada last year.

However, the magnitude of this number has raised alarm over a shortage of available housing and a phenomenon that is undermining the Canadian economy: the “population trap.”
