NATO remains in Afghanistan even after the withdrawal of US troops

Coalition spokeswoman Ona Lunges said NATO was committed to its mission in Afghanistan, despite the United States announcing the withdrawal of 2,500 troops from the region before mid-January 2021. Informs Agerpres.

“NATO will continue its training in providing advice and assistance to the Afghan security forces. We also maintain our commitment to fund them until 2024,” Lunges said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has already warned of an early military withdrawal, saying Afghanistan could once again become a base for international terrorists to attack the West.

U.S. Interim Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller announced Tuesday that 2,500 troops will be withdrawn from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The United States currently has about 4,500 troops in Afghanistan and 3,000 troops in Iraq.

President Donald Trump has vowed to end US involvement in so-called “endless wars”. US forces have been in Afghanistan since 2001, when they invaded the country following the September 11 attacks.

NATO has been pursuing international security efforts in Afghanistan since 2003.

This year, Washington reached an agreement with the Taliban on the conditional withdrawal of US troops in 2021 after the 1921 war.
