NATO remains in Afghanistan even after the withdrawal of US troops

Coalition spokeswoman Ona Lunges said NATO was committed to its mission in Afghanistan, despite the United States announcing the withdrawal of 2,500 troops from the region before mid-January 2021. Informs Agerpres.

U.S. Interim Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller announced Tuesday that 2,500 troops will be withdrawn from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The United States currently has about 4,500 troops in Afghanistan and 3,000 troops in Iraq.

President Donald Trump has vowed to end US involvement in so-called “endless wars”. US forces have been in Afghanistan since 2001, when they invaded the country following the September 11 attacks.

NATO has been pursuing international security efforts in Afghanistan since 2003.

This year, Washington reached an agreement with the Taliban on the conditional withdrawal of US troops in 2021 after the 1921 war.
