Massive protests continue over coup in Myanmar. Millions of people are demanding the release of political leaders

Mass protests in Myanmar against the regime change that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi continued for the third day in a row on Monday. AFP reports that police used water cannons against protesters for the first time.

Millions of people gathered in Rangoon, the country’s economic capital. Protesters called for a general strike.

Workers, monks, lawyers, students and nurses are taking part in the protest, with many holding Aung San Suu Kyi’s National Democratic League (NLD) flags, which have been kept secret since February 1.

Newspaper slogans such as “Release our leaders”, “Respect our votes”, and “Reject regime change” can be read.

Similar demonstrations are taking place in many cities across the country.

In the capital, Naypyidaw, law enforcement forces used water cannons against protesters, AFP reports. AcerPress.

According to media reports, two people were injured when two artillery shells fell to the ground after water cannons were used in the film.

On Sunday, protests erupted without major incidents, with protesters calling for a general strike on Monday: “Nationwide Revolution Against Dictatorship.”
Dozens of officers went on strike last week in protest.

These are the largest demonstrations of violent repression by the military since the 2007 uprising.

Following the plot, former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest in the capital, Naypyidaw, last Monday, and a spokesman said she was “in good health.” For democracy, the AFP quoted.
