Technology, science, education and social responsibility come together in the refurbished sailboat project “Galaxie”, which after an investment of 600,000 euros becomes the first 100% electric training vessel over 20 meters in length in the Balearic Islands, with the mission of strengthening the protection of the Balearic Sea.
This emblematic vessel, donated to the Joves Navegants Foundation for the education and training of disadvantaged youth on the islands, renews its image and includes advanced zero-emission technological equipment in order to promote research and awareness on marine environmental protection.
TrueWorld, an entity specialized in implementing technological solutions for decarbonisation, is leading this project that contemplates, among other aspects, changing the combustion engine of the sailboat “Galaxie” to an electric motor from PhoenixOne.
“Galaxy” and the “Love the Mediterranean” initiative.
The Love The Mediterranean initiative in Alcudiamar, in the port of Alcudia, in Mallorca, presented this training sailboat measuring 21 meters long and 5 meters wide, the electrification of which required an investment of 409,000 euros, as explained by the CEO and partners. TrueWorld founder, Marco Mendoza, who highlighted the support of sponsors to make the project a reality.
After fifteen months of work to convert the boat to 100% electric, the “Galaxie” will sail to Palma thanks to renewable energy. Mendoza explained that the ship contains batteries that last between eight and ten hours, flexible solar panels integrated into the sails, and wind motors that are charged during navigation.
The ship will begin its maiden scientific mission at dawn, which is expected to culminate in its arrival at the Palma International Boat Show (PIBS) at Mall Ville in Palma.
Technological transformation
During the presentation in Alcudiamar, in front of about thirty attendees, Mendoza reiterated the combined efforts of institutions, companies, professionals and collaborators who made the sailboat conversion possible to start its new phase.
At the Maritime Exhibition in Palma, the public will be able to visit this sailboat and learn more about this non-profit initiative, with the aim of uniting technology, innovation, science and social impact, which is fundamental to corporate social responsibility, as mentioned from the real world.
The PhoenixOne shipyard was responsible for the engine conversion, and Banca March, Brow Project, Alcudiamar, Quantum Sails and Omni Access, among other entities, have collaborated on different lines of this initiative, which aims to reach Ibiza, where it will also and is expected to host talks and workshops. About protection and awareness around the sea.
