(CNN Spanish) – Tropical Storm John It came up in the last minutes on Sunday Central Mexico time (early Monday morning in Miami) vs Oaxaca BeachAccording to Mexico's National Meteorological Service (SMN) and the United States' National Hurricane Center (NHC).
John became the 10th named storm of the 2024 Pacific tropical cyclone season. Of these hurricanes, two have become hurricanes (Carlotta and Gilma), SMN says.
According to Update at 6:00 am local time SMN's (8:00 a.m. Miami time), Tropical Storm John is strengthening as it approaches Mexico and is already producing rain in the south and southeast of the country.
According to the forecast, John will gradually gain strength before making a landslide.
SMN said the tropical cyclone is currently moving slowly in a north-northeast direction at a speed of 6 kmph.
As of 6 a.m. this Monday, SMN notes, John was 200 km south of Punta Maldonado, Guerrero, and 250 km west-southwest of Puerto Angel, Oaxaca.
It is expected to continue moving north-northeastward before making landfall in Oaxaca.
The SMN forecast highlights that, for now, John will not become a hurricane and make landfall as a tropical storm.
However, stay tuned for NHC updates because “John can gain strength than predicted depending on how long it stays above water.”
At this time, John's track indicates that the tropical storm is moving toward Oaxaca and will make landfall around noon on Tuesday, September 24.
As of 6 a.m. Monday, Tropical Storm John had sustained winds of 100 km/h and sustained gusts of 120 km/h.
John is expected to produce the following effects:
- Unusual occasional rainfall (more than 250 mm) in Oaxaca.
- Occasional rainfall (150 to 250 mm) occurs in Guerrero and Chiapas.
- The possibility of heavy occasional rainfall (75 to 150 mm) increases over parts of Veracruz.
- Occasional very heavy rainfall (50 to 75 mm) increases in Morelos and Puebla.
- Also, heavy rainfall (25 to 50 mm) is possible in parts of the state of Mexico.
- Winds of 70 to 90 km/h and waves of 2 to 4 meters are possible along the coast of Oaxaca.
- Winds of 40 to 60 km/h with waves of 1 to 3 meters are also forecast along the coasts of Guerrero and Chiapas.
- In these cases, there is a probability of water table formation.

- Tropical storm warning from Bahías de Huatulco east to Salina Cruz, Oaxaca.
- Hurricane Warning for Punta Maldonado, Guerrero, Bahias de Huatulco, Oaxaca.
“A typhoon warning means that typhoon conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area, in this case within the next 24 to 36 hours. Arrangements to protect life and property should be taken quickly,” states the NHC.
“Tropical storm warning means tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area during the next 36 hours,” it added.
