Cuba is formally applying to join the BRICS group

(CNN Spanish) –– The Cuban government confirmed this Tuesday that South Africa has formally applied to join the BRICS group of countries that later joined Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Perera said the BRICS are consolidating themselves as “key actors in global geopolitics and regionally confident”.

Russian Ambassador to Havana Victor Coronelli announced the news on Sunday. “Cuba has shown interest in joining the BRICS,” he said in reports gathered by Russian state agency TASS.

Coronelli also said that Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has been invited to participate in an extended meeting parallel to the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24.

“In our opinion, they are interested in all the activities of the BRICS group,” noted the Russian ambassador. “We will have to wait for the decision to grant association status to see where they will participate more or less actively.”

At the start of the year, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran and Egypt formally joined the BRICS group, while other Latin American countries, such as Bolivia, were favored by some of its defenders to join the bloc. As an alternative to the group of developed countries known as the G7.
