More than 160 new teachers specializing in Science, Technology and Society graduate – Science

A total of 167 new teachers graduated from the Chair of Science, Technology and Society, an initiative of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT).

The 5th edition of the course ran from March to November 2020, in virtual mode from the Conacyt platform, with a workload of 250 hours.

Through the virtual modality, teachers from all over the country participated, being of the 167 new graduates, 40 from Itapúa, 40 from Central, 24 from Capital, 14 from Canindeyú, 9 from Caaguazú, 7 from Alto Paraná, 6 from Ñeembucú, 5 from Misiones, 5 from Cordillera, 4 from Paraguarí, 4 from Amambay, 3 from Guairá, 2 from Presidente Hayes, 1 from Caazapá and 1 from San Pedro. It should be noted that two foreign teachers also participated: 1 from Uruguay and 1 from Colombia.

The objective of the course was to promote a training process aimed at practicing teachers and educational technicians, about the incorporation of the STS approach in teaching, as a pedagogical alternative, which allows a socially contextualized teaching-learning process of science.

With the 5th edition of the CTS chair, Conacyt has already trained a total of 513 teachers of all levels and from all over the country. On this occasion, there was support from the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI) and the Polytechnic Faculty of the National University of Asunción (UNA).

Promoters of scientific culture

On behalf of the new graduates, Valeria Fernández, from the Itapúa Department thanked the organizing institutions for their initiative during the closing of this edition of the chair.

“The title that we have achieved brings with it a great responsibility with our students and with Paraguayan society (…) we are called to be promoters of training in scientific, social and technological culture. We cannot continue applying the same teaching-learning processes of years ago, we must recognize that there is a great gap between what our students and today’s society need and what they receive daily at school. And we can make the change, “he said.

Eng. Eduardo Felippo, president of Conacyt, highlighted the importance of the education and training of teachers in CTS, as well as the number of graduates of the fifth edition, which was achieved thanks to the virtual modality at the beginning of the pandemic, he explained Furthermore, this type of initiative helps to develop science in the country. Finally, he congratulated the new graduates for having successfully completed the CTS Chair, which was co-financed by Conacyt through the Prociencia Program, with support from FEEI.
