Dominican President Luiz Abinader today announced that he has discussed bilateral relations with his Chinese envoy, Xi Jinping.
“I especially thank him for allowing me to export vaccines to the Dominican Republic,” the Dominican president said in a tweet this morning.
The president also said they talked about increasing trade and exports from the Dominican Republic, an Asian company.
“I talked to #China President Xi Jinping about the bilateral relations between our countries. I especially thanked him for allowing DR to export vaccines. We also talked about increasing trade and exports from DR.” Dominican President.
The Dominican Republic established diplomatic relations with China in May 2018, during the administration of former President Danilo Medina. That is, the relationship with Taiwan broke down.
Abinader has repeatedly said that China cannot be trusted to invest in strategic areas. When asked what exactly he was referring to, he said they could not invest in airports, ports and telecommunications.
“On October 30, 2020, the Dominican President, in an interview with the Wilson Center, stated that the Dominican President is a non – partisan organization that defines itself as a forum for global issues.
“If they want investment in strategic parts of the country, they can do it,” the president said of China.
