The new SEREMI for the Greater Southern Region of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation was recently introduced. The official who addresses the regions of La Araucanía, Los Rios and Los Lagos.
The appointment fell to the Academician of the University of Austral de Chile (UACH), Maite Castro, a member of the Faculty of Science and current Rector.

Castro has worked at UACH since 2005 and was the first female chaplain candidate in the history of Universidad Austral in 2021.
She is a native of Santiago and the first woman in her family to have a higher education. He studied biochemistry at the University of Concepcion. He received his Ph.D. in Science, mentioned Cell and Molecular Biology at UACH and then improved after his Ph.D. at UCLA.
It is currently attached to the Institute of Biochemistry and Microbiology. He has been involved in the training of undergraduate and graduate students at different Chilean universities, and has contributed to the processes of teaching innovation, curriculum creation, project evaluation and scholarship, among others.
As a researcher, she has dedicated herself to studying brain metabolism and its association with neurodegenerative diseases associated with aging, leading numerous research projects and generating relevant and recognized scientific production. She is associate editor of the Journal of Neuroscience Research.
