(CNN) — Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are fighting over the French winery they once owned together, rekindling old feuds: New legal documents allege Pitt's “history of physical abuse” before her ill-fated flight in 2016.
This Thursday, Jolie filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court. In the document, obtained by CNN, he says that Pitt tried to sell his stake in Miraval Winery and that their negotiations broke down after Pitt stipulated that Jolie “sign a non-disclosure agreement.” Talk (other than in court) about Pitt's abuse of Jolie and her children by trying to connect Pitt's personal reputation with the Miraval business.”
This week's new filing comes from Pitt's 2022 lawsuit, in which he said he and Jolie agreed not to sell their shares in the winery without the other's permission. In a June 2023 filing, Jolie alleged that the sale of her stake in the winery was “retaliation” after an “adverse custody judgment.”
In Thursday's filing, Pitt alleged “a history of physical abuse toward Jolie that began long before the family's flight from France to Los Angeles in September 2016,” but did not go into further detail about that incident.
“At trial, Jolie will demonstrate through testimony, e-mails, photographs and other evidence why she was so concerned about her own misconduct that she broke her own agreement to buy Jolie's shares in Miraval because she refused to admit it. Accept your new and detailed NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement), ,” the filing says.
In the motion filed Thursday, Jolie says she agreed to sign a confidentiality agreement “not to disparage Miraval's wine business,” as part of the initial agreement that Pitt was to sell her stake in the winery. .
Pitt said in its June 2023 amended complaint that after Jolie refused to sign her nondisclosure agreement, he proposed an even broader nondisclosure agreement that “except in any arguments or testimony in court, neither party shall, directly or through its representatives, make any disparaging statement about the other party in a public forum.” opinion.”
CNN has reached out to Pitt's representative for comment on the new allegations that were revealed Thursday.
“Unwilling to be silenced by Jolie's confidentiality agreement, Mr. Pitt refused to buy Ms. Jolie. By refusing to buy her and then suing her, Mr. Pitt directly questioned why the deal was so important to him. And he hoped to bury: Ms. Jolie and her family,” Jolie's attorney, Paul Murphy, said in a statement to CNN on Thursday. “After an eight-month delay, this motion asks the court to finally compel Mr. Pitt to produce that evidence.”
According to the documents, Jolie never ended up pressing charges against Pitt over the 2016 altercation because she “believed it was the best way for Pitt to take responsibility and help the family recover from the post-traumatic stress disorder he caused.”
CNN previously reported that Pitt was not arrested or charged in connection with the 2016 incident after the FBI concluded its investigation, and Pitt's representative denied Jolie's October 2022 filing. “Brad took responsibility for what he did, but he won't take responsibility for what he didn't do”
In October 2021, Jolie sold her half of the winery to Tenute Del Manto, a subsidiary of the Stoli Group controlled by Russian oligarch Yuri Scheffler.
The ongoing legal proceedings and “Pitt's relentless efforts to control and punish Jolie are taking an enormous emotional and financial toll on her and her family,” the filing says. “Jolie longs for her family to heal and for her children to no longer suffer pain and trauma, and she truly believes Pitt wants the same.”
Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016. They were declared legally divorced in 2019, and a joint custody agreement was established in 2021.
Legal proceedings related to the Miraval dispute are also ongoing. The former couple bought the estate and winery in the south of France in 2008.
