Lapatella
As of October 2024, the US government has confirmed that some bills will no longer be valid in stores, including popular chains like Walmart, Target and Dollar Tree.
This change is due to a new initiative to improve the security of the monetary system.
Which invoices will be rejected?
Damaged banknotes, which include those deemed “mutilated” by banks, will no longer be accepted. This indicates:
– Banknotes with tears or missing corners.
– Banknotes that are discolored or deformed, often due to wearing wet clothing.
These types of bills will not only be rejected in stores, but also by banks and ATMs.
This measure seeks to protect the integrity of the dollar and prevent fraud.
The goal of the new regulation
The move is part of a collaborative effort by the government, along with the Bureau of Engraving, the Secret Service and the Advanced Anti-Counterfeiting Steering Committee.
The goal is to strengthen currency security measures to prevent counterfeiting.
Changes in the design of banknotes
The introduction of new banknote designs is also expected. The proposed dates for new designs are:
-2028: New design for the $50 bill.
-2030: Update of the $20 bill.
-2032-2035: The new design of the $5 bill was introduced.
-2034-2038: Redesign of the $100 bill.
Currently, there are seven types of banknotes issued by the Federal Reserve: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100.
