NEW YORK — Mets general manager Billy Eppler on Tuesday endorsed manager Buck Showalter and the team’s coaching staff, saying no major changes were on the horizon despite a 35-43 start that dropped the club to fourth place. Games behind the leading Braves.
Eppler said of Showalter: “I think he’s going to lead us on a path to success.
In explaining why the Mets have struggled so much, Eppler mostly pointed to the pitching staff, which has underperformed projections made by the club’s front office. He didn’t say it was an issue of misdirection, but rather that Mets coaches like Showalter “deserve a chance to pursue this, all the support we can give them.”
When asked specifically how the Mets can improve to make the playoffs, Eppler pointed out that internal improvements are key. He cited that the fields of training, fitness and analysis are important for any improvement.
According to people familiar with the situation, Eppler’s comments mirror those of team owner Steve Cohen, who will hold a similar news conference at Citi Field on Wednesday.
“I think we share the same emotions,” Eppler said.
