At the CCT Canarias campus, a group of five ESO students experimented with innovative casting techniques to develop a real R&D project.

The blog created during the project describes what they learned this summer in the Art Foundry Workshop at the ULL School of Fine Arts.

This summer, a team of young people from the Canary Islands created unique works of art using technology and science. It was at the CCT Canarias campus promoted by the University of La Laguna and developed within the framework of the “Approaching Science and Innovation” program of the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI).

A group of five ESO students participating in the 2024 Science and Technology Campus experimented with different innovative casting techniques to develop a real R&D project, and all the knowledge gained throughout the process was reflected in a blog, which they also created, describing the rich scientific experience in the Artistic Foundry Workshop Hall of the ULL Faculty of Fine Arts: https://cctcanariasg02.wordpress.com/

The project called “TAF” is part of the Science, Society, Humanities and Art axis of the CCT Canarias Campus and was led by Ruth Cafiero Luján as principal investigator, developing workshops in his department on sculpture techniques and procedures as well as teaching and research in different techniques related to sculpture and materials technology.

During these two weeks, these young people – Carla, Rodrigo, Gabriel, Ramin and Pablo – were able to apply the foundations of the scientific method and all the basic steps and rules for conducting an investigation, the sculptural language and its variables, and learn about the techniques and procedures currently used in artistic casting, such as microdrop casting or casting of ceramic shells with lost wax, as well as the techniques for artistic casting of computer-designed objects.

In this process, they developed their skills in the visual arts and, by visiting the different university infrastructures and facilities, these students were able to get an idea of what they would like to study later, thus achieving the initial objectives set to stimulate learning, promote scientific and technological careers and bring the world of research, development and academic innovation closer to young Canarians.
