Challenges at Havana's Jose Martí Airport affect international air routes

CubitaNOW Editorial ~ Monday, June 17, 2024

The airline Avianca decided to temporarily suspend flights between Bogota and Havana due to operational problems at Jose Martí International Airport in the Cuban capital, according to the company.

Avianca did not set a date for the resumption of flights to the island, but confirmed that it would continue to provide corresponding refunds to affected passengers. The company recommended that customers keep their contact information updated to facilitate communication if necessary.

This decision by Avianca adds to a series of recent suspensions of other airlines operating in Havana. Aerolínea Argentinas canceled its route via Cancun, Wingo stopped flights from Medellin, and most recently, the Bolivian airline halted operations from Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

In May, Cubana Airlines also faced difficulties by suspending its regular flights between Havana, Cayo Coco and Buenos Aires, after 39 years of continuous operations. The reason mentioned is the refusal of fuel supply companies in Argentina, coinciding with the change of the government of that country.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry stated at the time that the Cuban airline had explored various alternatives to maintain planned operations licensed by the Argentine civil aviation authorities.

Operational challenges at Havana's José Martí Airport have raised concerns among international airlines, affecting air connectivity between Cuba and several Latin American countries.
