Chris Pine struggled with acne early in his career and had to stay strong in Hollywood.

In a recent episode of the “Happy Chat Confused” podcast, Pine said she had “terrible skin” as a teenager and after college, and that acne can sometimes be thought of as something only teenagers suffer from. In her case, she said, it was “very debilitating and really emotionally disabling.”
“It was one of the most traumatic points in my life, but this is my story,” he said.
The debate was sparked by podcast host Josh Horowitz, who asked Pine about comments made by “The Oc” casting director Patrick Rush in Allen's 2023 book Sepinwall, “Welcome to The Oc: The Oral History” last year.
Rush revealed that Pine read for the role of Ryan Atwood for the series, but at the time his “extremely bad skin” was “insurmountable” for Rush. Atwood's role eventually went to actor Ben McKenzie, who starred in the series from 2003 to 2007.
Pine said frankly that Rush felt “there was no need to talk about it” in the book.
“I can understand that they want beautiful people to do beautiful things and severe acne is not ideal,” she said. “I don't want to say I'm grateful that I didn't get it (…) but I'm fine.”
Pine, of course, is fine. He went on to a successful Hollywood career in which he played Captain Kirk in the rebooted “Star Trek” franchise and appeared in critically acclaimed films such as “Don't Worry Darling” and “Hell or High Water.”
