Elton John achieved status EGOT.
The legendary British singer and pianist won an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) Monday night for “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium,” a three-hour concert documentary that aired on Disney+.
John said he felt it “Incredibly respectful” To join the elite group of winners EGOT is an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award winner.
“The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication and the unwavering support of my fans around the world,” John, 76, said in a statement after winning his trophy.
The superstar artist has five Grammy Awards, “Ida by Elton John & Tim Rice” in 2001; two Oscars in 1994 for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King” and “(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again” from “Rocketman”; And Tony for his original score on “Aida.”
He is one of the best-selling solo artists of all time and holds the record for best-selling physical single of all time, with 1997's “Candle in the Wind” selling 33 million copies.
John He became the 19th person to achieve EGOT status Viola Davis accomplished this feat when she won a Grammy last year. Other artists with an EGOT include Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson and John Legend.
John's husband and producer of the concert special, David Furnish, said Monday night that John was so happy he won his first Emmy that he “shouted out loud.” Furnish said the “incredibly honourable” John was unable to attend the awards ceremony as he was recovering from recent surgery.
“We contacted him on Facebook. We woke him up in the middle of the night,” Furnish said while holding John's award backstage. “He's back in England. “His left knee was replaced, which isn't surprising when you think about how many pianos he's jumped from.”
John's concert was the last show of a three-night adventure at Los Angeles Stadium as part of the North American leg of his farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which began in September 2018 with more than 300 scheduled dates. It was suspended in 2020 and resumed in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
His last show attracted more than 50,000 peopleFeaturing a new generation of stars including Dua Lipa and Brandi Carlyle.
The singer's specials include Apple Music's Super Bowl Halftime Show Starring Rihanna, ABC's Oscars telecast, CBS's Tony Awards telecast and Netflix's “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage.”
“Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy they bring to all of our lives,” John said. “Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my life. “I'm incredibly grateful.”
