Future artists will transform a large house in Cantabria into a space for residents

Puente Viejo (EFE).- The Bustillo Ceballos-Casona Palace in the town of Vargas, in Puente Viejo, will become a sustainable space designed by students of art, design and architecture with proposals from neighbors.

Through this rehabilitation project, the EDP Foundation launches its public art program in Cantabria, after two editions in Asturian cities.

This program provides the opportunity for art, design and architecture students from Spanish universities to participate in a competition to transform a building into a sustainable public space.

To do this, these future artists, designers and architects of that space capture the proposals proposed by the neighbors of the place where the space to be rehabilitated is located.

After selecting this mansion located in the city of Cantabria, the citizen participation process begins on March 14, where residents will be able to contribute their ideas to find out what they would like to inhabit in this space.

On Tuesday, the Center for Rock Arts of Cantabria, located in Puente Viesjo, hosted the presentation of this project to the authorities and neighbors to inform them of the timeline that will be followed from now on for the rehabilitation of the Bustelo-Casona Ceballos Palace, also known as the Cantabrian Palace. Casona de los Lastras.

It is a plot of land with an area of about 8,000 square metres, and consists of this palace, a guard house, a type of stables and a garden with many unique trees that have been inventoried by the Cantabrian government, as explained by the mayor. Vizgo, Oscar Villegas, during the event.

“We are clear that there is a great demand from our region to enable public space for the development of social, cultural, recreational and cultural activities, making it possible to use these buildings for libraries, exhibition halls and museum space or for conferences and meetings,” Villegas noted.

Restoring spaces in a sustainable way

EDP Foundation Director, Vanda Martins, emphasized that the rehabilitation of this Cantabrian palace represents an opportunity to promote the recovery of spaces in a sustainable way, and to this end, the smallest people are being trusted to design the new space.

This provides an opportunity for a new avenue of experimentation to propose innovative solutions that maximize rural environments, but will also include the participation of the residents of Puente Viejo who will be responsible for defining the needs of the new public space. Which has already begun to “build together”.

In March, a citizen engagement process will begin where space will be made available so neighbors can submit their suggestions and ideas and groups will also be created to engage in conversations and workshops around this public art program.

Ideas, from March to May

From now on, until May, the usefulness of this space and what requirements it must meet will be determined in proposals submitted by students of fine arts, design and architecture until September.
