Bilbao City Council has established a new order in the public space of Indautxu street attending only to a safety criterion. The Public Space Directorate has analyzed the elements of urban furniture detecting security problems for neighbors, and people who use this street, which has led the City Council to reorganize this area.
In order to minimize them, it has established aa new organization of the elements. For this, it has had the support and collaboration of both the Bilbao Centro hotel and trade association and the Cleaning and Waste Collection services of the municipal Services and Quality of Life Area.
This detected risk is generated by a series of circumstances that the new street planning aims to correct.
First of all, lthe existence of an island of containers at the end of the street –The popularly known as Particular de Indautxu has no way out–. This location of the tanks made it difficult for cleaning vehicles to access them, which, in order to carry out their task, had to do complicated maneuvers including reversing, with the undoubted danger that this generates.
Therefore and after evaluating the situation, it has been decided to remove them and place a single battery of containers (of the paper-cardboard, organic, packaging and rest fractions) at the entrance to the street, at the confluence with Gregorio de la Revilla. Only a glass igloo already located at the beginning of Indautxu street will remain in its previous location.
After analyzing all the elements of urban furniture, it has also been determined the elimination of a wastebasket and a bank, also in order to guarantee accessibility to the portals.
The action that has taken place in Indautxu does not want to be an isolated event. One of the objectives of the Directorate of Public Space is to study the streets of the city in a global way, and if necessary, reorder their elements, with accessibility and security as the only premises according to the demand of the neighbors, shops and hoteliers in the area. –
