Oyate Group is an organization based in New York City, USA, which is inviting Beyond Rising Internship Program from 2022. The proposal aims to provide opportunities for undocumented students. Some young migrants are selected to gain work experience for 5 weeks.
This year’s edition received more than 300 applications and 45 high school and university students were selected.
Most of these children were Latin American and had been distributed throughout the previous month at Fordham and Lehman College. These educational institutions are located in The Bronx district.
Augustina Wharton, director of Beyond Rising, said 20 undocumented youth were selected to participate in the program in the previous year. Neysy Vicente, coordinator of the Oyate group, said the plan will be in effect from July 7 to the end of August 2023.
Call for 2024
Ms. Vicente said the initiative welcomes people from Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico and other countries. Registration for 2024 will open from February.
One of the young women participating in the internship is Ashley, a 16-year-old student from the Dominican Republic. The woman has been assigned to produce podcasts at Lehman College’s Institute of Mexican Studies.
José Higuera López, director of the center, clarified that New York has financial resources for scholarships for young immigrants.
Another undocumented immigrant was Elvis, a 20-year-old Mexican who was invited to carry out photographic activities within the project. Among the members of Rising Beyond 2023, 23-year-old Dominican Fernando has a mission to attend areas of communication.
