(CNN) — John Stamos and twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are like a family now, but it wasn’t always like that.
During the latest episode “Good Friends” PodcastStamos spoke with Josh Beck and Ben Soffer about their initial efforts to get the twin sisters back on “Full House” after they were fired from the show at the actor’s request.
The Olsens shared the role of Michael Tanner, the youngest member of the “Full House” family, and Stamos played uncle Jesse Katsopolis.
Stamos said that while filming the pilot for the show, he and his co-star Dave Coulier, who played Joey Gladstone, were in a scene changing the diapers of one of the twins.
“We got the baby down and I think I had her under the arms and Dave was holding her little feet,” Stamos recalled. “We took her to the kitchen and put her downstairs, turned on the fan, and wrapped her in paper towels. She was screaming. Both of them were screaming. They wanted to be anywhere but there, and so was I.
Stamos suggested they swap the 11-month-old twins with someone else.
“I couldn’t cope,” he said. “I thought it wasn’t going to work, so they removed them.”
Fortunately for the Olsens, Stamos said his replacement wasn’t up to the task, and the duo finally returned to the show that made their careers famous.
