Luis Parada and Celia Medrano submit their applications as pre-candidates for the presidency with Nuestro Tiempo

Luis Barada and Celia Medrano will enroll in Nuestro Tiempo’s internship as pre-candidates for the positions of President and Vice President, respectively.

Luis Barada and Celia Medrano submitted an application to register as the presidential formula for the internal elections of the Nuestro Tiempo political party, Barada announced through social networks.

Party director Andy Filer had already confirmed the interest of two profiles to run for the 2024 elections: lawyer Luis Barada as a presidential candidate and human rights defender Celia Medrano as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2024 elections.

According to Failer, both characters are “respectable and courageous”.

“With our faith in truth, justice and fairness to give El Salvador a better future, Celia Medrano and I have submitted an application to register as the presidential formula for the internal elections of Nuestro Tiempo,” announced Barada.

A Salvadoran lawyer living in the US added: “A new dawn is coming for El Salvador. This is our time”.

The profiles of Barada and Medrano were proposed by the civil movement “Sumar”.

Both candidates are the result of a dialogue to work on options and plans on how to get El Salvador out of the current crisis, gathering voices and groups with very different views, but motivated and with the same spirit to serve and protect the country. José Marinero, a member of the Movement for Democracy, told El Diario de Hoy.

Barada, an international arbitration expert and former Salvadoran military officer, has been critical of the current administration. Years ago, the same current president of the republic, Nayeb Bukele, described it as a “profile of admiration”.

Celia Medrano is a journalist who has worked to protect human rights.

Medrano served as Director of Humanitarian Management and Human Rights at El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as El Salvador’s Consul General in Washington, DC.

On May 31, Failer confirmed that Parada and Medrano had signed up with a political party to run internally.

“Luis Barada and Celia Medrano have joined Nuestro Tiempo, we welcome them and we believe it is important to raise the call for democratic solidarity that we must build. We know that this presidential formula coming from the proposal of civil society is not from a political party, we are to other political forces and social movements. We want to be a welcoming party,” Filer said.

Nuestro Tiempo’s internal elections are scheduled for Saturday, July 15.
