May is almost over, but it’s time to recognize the month’s greatest major league players.
Here are Chevrolet’s players, pitchers, rookies and relievers of the month.
Aaron Judge, NYY, American League Player of the Year
After winning the award three times in 2022, when he was the Young Circuit MVP, Judge won his first in 2023 and sixth. The slugger missed the first eight days of the month on the disabled list, but hit .342 with 12 home runs, 25 RBI, 20 walks and a 1.356 OPS in 21 games in May.
Freddie Freeman, LAD, National Leaguer
For the fourth time in his career and second time as a member of the Dodgers, Freeman is the NL Player of the Month. The first baseman finished May with a 20-game hitting streak. For the month, he hit .400 with six homers, 17 doubles, 26 RBIs, 12 walks and a 1.184 OPS in 28 games.
Nathan Ewaldi, TEX, AL Pitcher of the Month
Evaldi’s shutout in his last April start was a sign of things to come, as the right-hander went 4-0 with a 0.96 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 37.2 3 innings over five May starts. For the right-hander, it was his first Pitcher of the Month award.
Michael Wacha, SD, National League Pitcher of the Month
Wacha struggled in April (6.75 ERA), but got back on track in May, going 3-0 with a 0.84 ERA and striking out 26 in 32.0 innings over five starts, and was named Pitcher of the Month for the first time. The Padres right-hander allowed three extra-base hits all month, holding opponents to a .405 OPS.
Josh Jung, TEX, American League Rookie of the Month
Jung began June with American League Rookie of the Month honors. The third baseman has a hit in his last 14 May games with four homers, five doubles, 12 RBIs and a 1.284 OPS. Jung hit .318/.357/.561 in 26 games with six home runs in May.
Spencer Steer, CIN, National League Rookie of the Month
Steer had 25 hits in 64 at-bats (.291 average) over his last 15 games in May, and finished the month with 6 homers, 19 RBIs and a .945 OPS in 27 games. Earned league Rookie of the Month honors.
Alex Lange, DET, AL reliever of the month
Lange is the second Tigers pitcher to be recognized as reliever of the month, joining Shane Greene. Lange struck out 17 of the 41 batters he faced and allowed just one run in 10.2 innings (0.84 ERA) in May. He had seven saves in as many chances.
Camilo Doval, SF, National League Reliever of the Month
Dowell has been named National League reliever of the year three times in his career. The Dominican had 11 saves in May with a 1.32 earned run average and 23 strikeouts in 13.2 innings of work.
