TORONTO — Christopher Morell hit a tiebreaking double in the ninth inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 on Saturday.
Dansby Swanson added a three-run homer for the Cubs (65-56), who improved to 8-3 in August and won for the 18th time in 24 games.
Whit Merrifield hit a two-run homer, but Toronto (65-54) lost for the fourth time in five games after winning its previous four.
Cody Bellinger doubled off Chicago right-hander Jordan Hicks (1-7) to start the ninth.
Former Blue Jays right-hander Julian Merriweather (4-0) pitched one inning for the win, while right-hander Adbert Alsole finished the game for his 16th save in 17 chances.
For the Cubs, Dominican’s Morel is 4-1 with an RBI and Jaymer Candelario is 3-0.
For the Blue Jays, Dominicans Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was 4-1 with an RBI, and Santiago Espinal was 3-2 with a run and an RBI. Mexico’s Alejandro Kirk is 4-0.
