Proya Parish has broken all recent population records, and according to the latest data from the Municipal Register, the total population of the town was 2,740 in mid-September. This amount exceeds the 2,707 population that has so far been referred to as the highest mark which occurred in 2021 according to the statistics of the Asturian Economic and Industrial Association (SADEI).
“We have more neighbors than some entire Asturian councils, yet our level of services is very scalable,” says the president of the Provia Neighborhood Association, Manuel Valcarcel. He points out, among other things, and as a priority, the need for children’s playgrounds.
“We are an area of huge growth in single family homes that families with young children are reaching and if they want to have a place to play outdoors or a playground or a swing, they have to go to the urbanization area in Soto; here is none.”
To mitigate the situation, they suggest creating a space “even if it is in front of the community center, there is enough green space so that they can play some games and the children of the city do not have to go elsewhere,” says Valcarcel, upset because “in other parishes there are up to Two areas and a playing field, but here there is nothing and the number of children continues to grow.
Added to this lack of places for children are other needs such as “improving bus connections, because it is very difficult to get around by public transport”. “We feel isolated, we need many services that we don’t have and other services can be improved,” says the neighborhood leader.
