Santo Domingo City Council Denies Closing Chincha Area – El Nuevo Diario (Dominican Republic)

El Nuevo Diario, Santo Domingo – The Director of Culture and Leisure of the Santo Domingo Este City Council, Alfredo Reynoso, denied on Thursday allegations regarding the possible closure of the open recreational space known as Chincha.

Reynoso described the hints attributed to Mayor Dio Astasio and his team about the intention to close the popular entertainment space as “lies.”

He explained that Chincha was opened on May 16, 2022, after a series of concerns from Mayor Manuel Jimenez, who wanted to create a safe and recreational space for the community's families.

The municipal official referred to this issue when he interviewed journalists Jaime Rincón, Anody Ramírez, Raquel Rodríguez, Julio Samuel Sierra, Eduard Ramírez and Nelson Batista on the program “El Nuevo Diario en la Tarde,” broadcast on the digital platform of the newspaper El Nuevo TV.

In this sense, he stated that the aim of the previous authorities was to provide a place for healthy recreation without fear of crime.

“The place was created under the Francisco del Rosario Sánchez Bridge, known as La Bicicleta, a previously abandoned and crime-prone area,” he explained.

He noted that the idea of naming the space in honor of Chencha, the son of the famous dancer who made history with her partner Bonnie, came in honor of her legacy and cultural contribution.

“Chencha’s goal has always been to provide a place where families can enjoy their time in a healthy and safe way. There is no plan to close the space. Claims to the contrary are simply attempts to mislead the community,” he said.
