Science in Camagüey at the service of the Revolution

CAMAGÜEY.- “Technology and innovation are today more necessary than ever to overcome the complex challenges facing the Cuban nation,” said the territorial delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma), Liosha Áreas Artiles, in the provincial ceremony for the Day of Science in Cuba, where the work of those who contribute to their country from their field was praised.

In that space, the Juan Tomás Roig Distinction was given to researchers Caridad Abreu Oduardo and Ediliuska Benito Zamora, for their career and contributions made in more than 20 years of work. Due to the accumulation of merits in society, politics and at work, the National Union of Education, Science and Sports conferred the 60th Anniversary Commemorative Seal, established for the only time, to Josefa Primelles Fariñas and Sariel Hernández González. In the collective order, it was awarded to Citma and the Center for Information and Technological Management of the region.

“The last two years have been difficult for Cubans, however, we have witnessed an extensive vaccination campaign aimed at protecting the people. This mission has been carried out thanks to the efforts of those scientists who with their work have contributed to saving lives”, said Yohanis Guerra Echegoye, Organizer of the Provincial Committee of the Union of Education, Science and Sports.

Due to its significant results, of high economic and social impact, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), of this demarcation, and for the good performance in its indicators, in the year 2021, the Center for Environmental Research, the Center for Environmental Engineering and the Center for Information and Technological Management stood out.

The Provincial Meteorological Center, the Institute of Grains, the Institute of Soils, the National Center for Animal Health, the Institute of Tropical Foods, the Institute of Agricultural Engineering, the Water Science, Innovation and Technology Company were also honored. the Center for Immunobiology and Biological Products, the Infantry and Weapons Research Center, the Center for the Development of Social and Humanistic Sciences in Health and the Carlos J. Finlay and Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz University of Medical Sciences.

Another crucial moment was the granting of Along the Paths of Agramonte, created by the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba (CTC), from the territory, to Citma. The Provincial Government and the Provincial Directorate of Education also gave recognition to that same entity and, later, the work of the Geominera, Pesquera, Meat, Military Industrial Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz, GeoCuba Camagüey- Ciego de Ávila, Information Technology and Advanced Telematic Services, and the work of the International Collaboration Project for Livestock Development was praised.

At the meeting, the young José Miguel Rodríguez Hernández, who participated in the call for the Ibero-American Informatics Olympiad 2020-2021, and his coach Antonio Bouza Pérez were honored. In addition, the CTC and the Union of Education, Science and Sports Workers gave a special recognition to Citma for the Cuban Science Day.

Not to lose momentum in generating new ideas to favor the health system, the nation’s economy convened Liosha Artile Areas and posed as a challenge “adjusting our role in social development in the region. The country cannot only base its progress, on its national demand, on the export of primary products or the extensive use of the labor force” and concluded that there is no sustainable progress without the active participation of science in the processes of the Revolution.
