The rabies virus is transmitted through direct contact with an infected animal, including the saliva or tissue of the brain and nervous system. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).. The rabies virus attacks the central nervous system and causes brain disease that can be fatal without treatment.

The CDC recommends seeing a doctor for post-exposure treatment immediately after contact with an animal. Post-exposure treatment for those who have not received rabies vaccine includes one dose of immune globulin and four doses of vaccine over a two-week period.
