Spain and EU reject Venezuela election results – DW – 08/23/2024

Spain this Friday (08/23/2024) demanded the publication of the results of the Venezuelan presidential election on July 28 in a “detailed and verifiable” manner.

Without surprises, Venezuela's Supreme Court (TSJ) confirmed the re-election of Nicolás Maduro this Thursday, describing the ruling as “strong”.

“In order to recognize the results of the presidential election in Venezuela, it is necessary to publish the minutes with the voting results in a complete and verifiable manner, so that there is full transparency,” said official sources of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Venezuelan Socialist Pedro Sánchez.

“Until this happens, we cannot recognize the election results,” they added. The Spanish government will continue to work with its European and Latin American partners to “respect the democratic will of the Venezuelan people.”

Finally, they called for “a political solution based on dialogue and negotiation among the Venezuelan people, and that the arrests should stop and that social peace be maintained in the country.”

On the other hand, the European Union (EU) also rejected TSj's announcement. “We keep saying that we need to prove this election result, and right now we don't see any evidence. And until we see a verifiable result, we're not going to recognize it,” he explained this Thursday. Joseph Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs.

The Venezuelan opposition, led by María Corina Machado, claims the victory of its candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, who accused the TSJ of handing down “a sentence to appease the regime” of Maduro.
