The Chair of Excellence for Women in Science and Technology at UV – El Sol de Córdoba

Historically, the contribution and activity of women scientists has remained invisible and undervalued. Dr. Yareni Perrone Ventura, coordinator of the Chair of Excellence for Women in Science and Technology at the University of Veracruzana, warns.

This is explained by the researcher at the Institute of Biotechnology and Applied Ecology of Ultraviolet Radiation. In the history of science, when one asks about the names of female inventors or scientists, only a few names come to mind., “Because we have become invisible and consciously excluded from projects.”

What happened to women's inventions before?

It indicates that the most common thing is or was to be attributed to discoveries and knowledge to close men.For example, the husband or teachers, so that they do not know their value, “But in reality there are many women who have contributed to scientific advancement, but very little is known about them.”

He stresses that women's contributions have not been adequately valued and recognised over the centuries. “There are few female scientists present in our historical memory as authorities in science and technology, and in this void there are still many gender stereotypes.”

What is the goal of the UV Women's Chair of Excellence in Science and Technology?

From this standpoint, he stresses that the goal of the Chair of Excellence for Women in Science and Technology is: Contribute to the creation of academic and social spaces that enhance the visibility of scientists, technologists and inventors by disseminating their contributions..

He adds, however, The aim is to normalise and highlight women’s presence in these fields, and to disseminate and salvage the legacy of women’s contributions to science and technology. To publish the work of academics and enable young women to participate in undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Veracruzana.

This UV Chair therefore positions the institution as a spearhead for recognizing and accelerating the work of its researchers and scientists. “Their programmes are open to them, and although there is still a lot to achieve because the delay has a lot to do with cultural issues, there are important developments in their teaching processes.”

Dr. Yareni Peroni regrets that the delay of women in science has to do with cultural processes., “Because we are in a patriarchal system. Since we were young, we tend not to go into science because it is for boys, because we are not good at certain areas and these are terrible stereotypes.

A lot of that goes on and the time comes when “We don't even get to know other women, which is why we need to show ourselves and get to know each other.”

He points out that UV rays in this sense are the spearhead of the support they provide to their academics. They are powerful and now academics are participating in many scientific activities and this will undoubtedly change their choices a lot for future generations. “Because now we already have them, but we want the opportunities to be scientists to be unlimited for all women of Veracruz.”
