SAN FRANCISCO — This offseason, the San Francisco Giants had a goal of improving on their disappointing 2023 performance. To do so, they prioritize more athleticism, better defense and ball-playing ability.
South Korean gardener Jung Hoo Lee brings all these virtues together.
“We think it’s a perfect fit,” Farhan Zaidi, the Giants’ president of football operations, said during a news conference introducing Lee.
“As we talk about the start of this season, our goals as a team from a defensive standpoint are to be more athletic, make more contact and play a more industrial type of baseball,” Zaidi said. “Honestly, when we looked at our options this season, there was no player or target that we wanted to achieve more than Jung Hoo.”
Lee’s baseball talents emerged during a scouting by the Giants who observed Lee’s play in the South Korean league. Feedback was enhanced by his performance in the last World Classic.
Lee also showed some of his personality during his press conference. He delivered an opening statement in English with an emphatic harangue.
“Come on, Giants!” he exclaimed, and dubbed himself the “grandson of the wind,” nicknamed the “son of the wind” in honor of his father, Zhang Brom Lee, who the new Giants player says he can’t compare to. .
Zaidi called the day “exciting”.
“Even though he’s using an interpreter, it’s obvious that he has a personality that really shines through. I think he’s a great addition for us, but we’re conscious of creating excitement and energy in the company. You can definitely feel that today.
San Francisco has missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons after setting a franchise record with 107 wins when they claim the NL West crown in 2021.
The Giants missed out on signing some homegrown free agents the past two offseasons. Last week, Shohei Ohtani decided to sign with the bitter rival Los Angeles Dodgers.
