The Mets beat the Giants with cannonballs

NEW YORK — Justin Verlander pitched seven strong innings for his first win.

Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor in the third behind Anthony Desclafani (4-8).

Tommy Baum added an RBI double off Sean Manaea in the fourth and New York (37-46) began July with a much-needed win, going 6-19 in its last 25 games.

“I’m glad June is over,” manager Buck Showalter admitted before the game.

Verlander (3-4), 40, allowed five hits, struck out six and scored no runs in his 248th win and first since May 21 against Cleveland. The three-time Cy Young Award winner was (0-2) in his previous six starts.

For the Giants, Venezuela’s Wilmar Flores is 4-0; Tyro Estrada 4-1; and Luis Matos 3-1.

For the Mets, Puerto Rican Lindor went 4-1 with a run and an RBI. Francisco Alvarez of Venezuela had a run and an RBI in a 3-1 victory; And Louis Guillorme 3-0.
