The OAS will meet again this Friday to discuss the situation in Venezuela

This Friday, August 16, The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) will hold an extraordinary meeting to consider a draft resolution on the situation in Venezuela.

The draft resolution was submitted on behalf of the United States and its co-sponsors Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Suriname and Uruguay.

The meeting comes a day after Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Colombian President Gustavo Pedro called for a rerun of presidential elections in Venezuela.

“Venezuela has several options, one of which is a coalition government, I don't want to comment emotionally because it's not in favor of one or the other. Maduro has 6 months left in his term, he's still president. Another (option to exit the Venezuelan crisis) could be new elections,” he said. Lula said.

For his part, Pedro said: “A political solution for Venezuela that brings peace and prosperity to its people depends on Nicolás Maduro.” He also suggested the creation of a “national front” in Venezuela as a “definitive solution” to the political crisis.

For this proposition, Opposition leader María Corina Machado responded: “If we go to the second election and you don't like the results, do we go to the third, fourth or fifth as long as Maduro wants it? We went to the elections with tyrannical rules and many people said we were crazy (…) These coalition projects, we have to be very careful because the examples (Lula) mentions were political differences, but both have been democratic groups or at least not involved in criminal activities.
