The last flood of the Ebro caused important floods, but the Ebro Resilience project aims to prevent them, flooding spaces that are being returned to the river. The question we must ask ourselves is whether the Ebro Resilience project is enough or not. Our answer is no. We believe that it falls short and that the only alternative is to expand this project in order to return space to the Ebro.
We can consider making stronger defenses but the force of the water is very difficult to stop, in the end some defense bursts and damage is caused. It is necessary to carry out actions in areas where year after year it is verified that floods occur. These actions involve giving back space to the Ebro. We cannot look the other way or wait for the next flood of the Ebro.
In the riverside municipalities of the Ebro, the agricultural surface with respect to the total of its municipal terms is very high. Returning territory to the Ebro would reduce the intensity of the floods, the laminaria, it would be possible to recover non-existent riverbank spaces in some municipalities or reduced to the minimum expression.
In short, the recovery of space for the Ebro supposes a recovery of natural spaces for society as a whole and that is extremely positive.
