Yesterday, August 22, 2024, in La Laguna, at the Canarian Popular Culture Center, the second meeting was held between the Rebelión Cientifica, the CCOO, the UGT, the CGT, the Intersindical Tenerife, the Kellis Union Tenerife and the Syndicato de Inquilinas de Tenerife.
At this meeting, alliances, bases and short-, medium- and long-term action strategies were created, progress was made on labour aspects and proposals for union formations were collected, focusing on the most vulnerable and risky sectors of the islands.
The development of the Common Front consists of two stages: in the first stage we deal with issues that fall within the federal sphere; in the second stage, the participatory process will be opened to the rest of the social and environmental actors.
We recall that the current situation in the Canary Islands is worrying: a third of the population is at risk of social exclusion with increasing job insecurity; an unsustainable housing crisis; a non-existent food sovereignty; an overburdened public health system; water, energy and climate emergencies already declared; continued destruction of ecosystems; hundreds of illegal discharges into the sea; loss of biodiversity; and the privatization of natural resources.
We are constantly breaking all climate records (high temperatures, heat waves, fog, frequency and intensity of fires…) as a result of political inaction in the face of collapse.
This common front represents an opportunity to move towards a Canary Islands model that leaves no one behind.
