(CNN) — Nowadays, it’s hard to find anything in the store for less than a dollar. But this Monday, in honor of National Cheeseburger Day, McDonald’s customers in the US can get a double cheeseburger for just 50 cents, just 45 cents more than the original 1948 burger.
Only customers using the McDonald’s app can access the offer, and it’s limited to one burger per person. According to the company’s official website, a McDonald’s cheeseburger costs between $1 and $2.79.
Historically, fast food has been an unprofitable business with low customer loyalty. Chains offer great giveaways, usually tied to their mobile apps, to drive business. Driving people to the app contributed to repeat customers.
McDonald’s isn’t the only burger chain to offer. Through Sept. 22, Wendy’s will sell its Junior Bacon and Cheeseburger for one cent when you buy something else from the menu.
The Burger King will be forced to abdicate his throne if he doesn’t do anything for National Cheeseburger Day. Loyal customers who join the chain’s Royal Perks program get a free cheeseburger, but only if they spend at least a dollar.
Smashburger, Krystal and Carl’s Jr. Regional chains also offer discounted burgers.
These ads are not new. Many burger chains have offered deals on National Cheeseburger Day in previous years.
