The Roche Institute Foundation has summoned the third edition of his aids to training in the area of ​​Data Science in Personalized and Precision Medicine, for the completion of a master’s degree at any accredited university or institution in the national territory during the 2021-2022 academic year.

In this third call, three scholarships will be awarded, on a competitive basis, as financial aid to cover tuition fees of up to a maximum of 7,000 euros each. The scholarship will allow selected individuals to increase their training in all key areas of Data Science, such as biomedicine, biopharmacy, medical informatics, decision support system, omics sciences, machine learning, artificial intelligence, personalized precision medicine, etc.

Last year, the number of applications received with respect to the first edition increased to a total of 34 candidates. Among them were selected Berta Segura, graduated in Biology from the University of Alcalá and PhD in Neuroscience from the Autonomous University of Madrid; Jonathan Gomez, Doctor in Microbiology from the University of Extremadura and post-doctorate from the University of Minnesota (United States); and finally, Xaquín Gurriarán, graduated in biology and doctorate in Molecular Medicine at the University of Santiago de Compostela.

In this third call, three scholarships will be awarded to cover tuition costs of up to a maximum of 7,000 euros each.

Through this call, the Roche Institute Foundation wants to highlight the need to incorporate new professional profiles in the field of data sciences to the health system, as stated in the document document Digital transformation of the healthcare system for the incorporation of Personalized Precision Medicine. This document, promoted by the Foundation, emphasizes the training of future professionals as a key tool for the complete transformation of the National Health System. In addition to ensuring the implementation and integration of Personalized Precision Medicine in healthcare and so that Spain is at the forefront of innovation in healthcare.

Thus, the higher holders may apply for the scholarships, preferably in careers in the branch of Sciences and Health Sciences. Likewise, engineering companies in the computing and electronics branch.

Consuelo Martín de Dios, managing director of the Foundation, highlighted that “data science is here to stay. Thanks to it, it will be possible to analyze large databases, interpret them. In addition to extracting knowledge that will be useful in the field of Medicine of the Future ”.

The members of the Board of Trustees of the Roche Institute Foundation will evaluate the applications and award the scholarships in accordance with the following criteria. First, they will carry out an assessment of the candidate’s curricular merits and work experience of up to 40 points. And, secondly, they will carry out an economic evaluation to finance the enrollment of the Master of up to 60 points.

Finally, Martín de Dios, has concluded that “Science and innovation are two key pieces for the growth of a country. For this reason, at the Roche Institute Foundation, we believe that it is important to encourage professionals, or future professionals, to continue training in this field.”. Likewise, it has underlined that “data science and digital transformation have become tools of prosperity for many countries and Spain is one of them ”.
