UABCS launches project to bring science to rural communities

“Let's go to the arena!” It seeks to spread scientific knowledge and diagnose local problems in the state of Baja California Sur.

Human Diaries | La Paz, Baja California Sur- The Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) launched the project “Let's go to the arena! Scientific dissemination and diagnosis of regional problems”, the primary purpose of which is to promote the social appropriation of knowledge generated at the institution and deepen the understanding of local challenges, with the aim of identifying alternative solutions.

The project began in the San Antonio community, where graduate students and researchers met in a public space to share part of their progress and research findings with residents.

Thus, in a close and accessible environment, members of the university community will present topics of interest to citizens, explaining in a simple way how their research can contribute to solving regional problems in areas such as environment, economy, social well-being and culture.

On the first day, a group of researchers and graduate students, together with staff assigned to the Inclusion Directorate of the Municipality of La Paz, spoke with people from the city of San Antonio, presenting to them part of their progress and the results of their theses. In addition to deepening understanding of local problems and identifying alternative solutions.

According to Dr. Ricardo Borquez Reyes, research professor at UABCS and head of the project, during the following months they will visit different sites for the same purpose. He even mentioned that although the activities are being conducted by researchers from the institution itself, the invitation is open to the general public interested in learning more about the rural towns in the region to join.

“This scientific publishing initiative seeks to transfer knowledge generated in university classrooms and laboratories directly to communities, and to involve the community in the research process. Diagnosing local problems is also a key element, gathering community interests and suggestions to focus research on the real needs of the region,” the university professor stressed.
