WhatsApp, the Metta-owned instant messaging app that is hugely popular in Spain, continues to expand its range of functions to improve the experience of its users. For a few months now, they have been working on introducing something like AirDrop.
It's Apple's file transfer functionality that aims to make you less dependent on an Internet connection to share multimedia content with people around you. This is known as 'Nearby People' or 'Nearby Sharing' and this is how it works.
Nearby sharing, WhatsApp's AirDrop
The feature provides end-to-end encryption between nearby users and an improved file sharing experience without revealing the phone number Screenshot of the latest beta of WhatsApp for iOS where the feature is exposed.
This feature allows you to share files with everyone from Android to iOS, but it has a slightly different implementation compared to Android. This is because instead of using the nearby device detection method used in Android, you have to scan a QR code to start sharing a file.
WhatsApp has been trying to do something like this for the iPhone for months, and QR code implementation has been hampered by limitations of Apple and iOS not allowing a network like AirDrop, but this seems to have been resolved. When available, pictures can be sent from iPhone to Android phone without internet.
With this functionality, if it works properly and the files don't lose quality, WhatsApp will become the go-to app for everyone to exchange or share files offline, regardless of the operating system you have. It's still in the early stages of development, which means it could change significantly before its official release and will work just like the Android version.
